AIEEE full form is All India Engineering Entrance Exam, and IIT is an acronym for the Indian Institutes of Technology. The AIEEE and the IIT are two distinct types of entrance exams. The IITs are the top-most institutions in India that offer excellent courses in technology and sciences. The government of India established them.
Summary
The AIEEE, which is currently known as the JEE Main, is organized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in Delhi. Candidates seeking admission to engineering and architecture programmes at various Indian colleges and universities must take the exam.
AIEEE vs IIT
The main difference between AIEEE and IIT is that AIEEE refers to an entrance exam held for admission to several engineering institutes. On the other hand, IIT refers to a prestigious group of Indian engineering institutes.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts AIEEE every year. It is held in May and June in several cities in India. The AIEEE was first undertaken in 2003; it was known as the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE). In 2012, the test was renamed JEE Main; however, ‘AIEEE’ is still commonly used.
The IITs are among India’s most respected schools, producing internationally recognised scientists and engineers. The oldest, IIT Bombay, was founded in 1958, and there are now 15 IITs across India. The IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE) is a test taken by individuals who want to study at one of the 16 Indian Institutes of Technology at the undergraduate level.
Comparison Table Between AIEEE and IIT
Parameters of Comparison | AIEEE | IIT |
Level of difficulty | Compared to the IIT entrance test, AIEEE is easier (IIT-JEE). | It is more challenging to gain admission to IITs. |
Significance | The focus of the examination is on speed, accuracy, and demand. | IIT-JEE places a premium on conceptual clarity and application. |
Full-Form | The test is formally known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination. | The full form of IIT is Indian Institute of Technology. |
Examination time frame | This evaluation lasts three hours. | The entrance examination for IITs is 6 hours long. |
Description | There is a system of tests for admission to several engineering and architectural colleges in India. | IIT refers to a set of India’s most prestigious engineering schools. |
What is AIEEE?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) organizes the AIEEE, which attracts around 15 lakh students each year. Candidates can apply for the AIEEE in two ways: online or offline. The test is offered in two formats: pen and paper and computer-based. The former takes place in May, while the latter takes place in June.
The exam consists of three sections, namely, physics, chemistry and mathematics, with a total of 180 objective types (multiple choice and matching type) questions. Each question carries four marks, each with a negative marking of one spot for wrong answers.
Candidates who clear this exam are eligible to take undergraduate courses at various engineering colleges across the country. Some include Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), other centrally funded technical institutions, participating institutes under state governments, self-financed institutes, etc.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is divided into two papers: JEE Main and JEE Advanced, has superseded the AIEEE from 2012. The CBSE organises JEE Main, whereas one of the seven Indian Institutes of Technology organises JEE Advanced (IITs).
What is IIT?
The IIT-JEE is a highly competitive entrance exam for the Indian Institutes of Technology. It is the most prestigious and selective colleges in India, admitting students from all over the world to study a variety of undergraduate majors. However, like other highly selective schools, getting into an IIT is as much about luck as it is about skill.
The IITs have a long history of producing internationally renowned scientists and engineers, with many IIT alumni holding director-level positions at top companies such as Google and Microsoft. For example, Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google), Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft) and Shantanu Narayen (CEO of Adobe) all graduated from IIT Kharagpur.
The Indian Institutes of Technology were founded in the 1950s by the government of India to train excellent scientists and engineers to help its newly independent country develop economically. Today the schools are among the ranked higher education institutions in Asia.
The IIT-JEE is a difficult test. The test takers are the best in India, and only a few make it through. The competition is fierce, and every year, only a few thousand people make it through this test to get admitted into the top schools.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an exam that was developed in India to admit students to undergraduate programs at various engineering colleges across the country. Students take this exam instead of applying directly to each college individually.
Main Differences Between AIEEE and IIT
- The AIEEE examination focuses on speed, accuracy, and demand, whereas the IIT-JEE emphasises clarity and application of multiple topics.
- AIEEE refers to the All India Engineering Entrance Examination, whereas IIT refers to the whole Indian Institute of Technology.
- In India, the AIEEE is an exam that is used to get into a variety of engineering and architectural schools. IIT, on the other hand, is a group of India’s most prestigious engineering schools.
- AIEEE entrance test is less complicated, but IIT admission is more difficult.
- The AIEEE test lasts three hours, but the entrance examination for IITs lasts six hours.
Conclusion
The AIEEE and the IIT are two distinct types of entrance exams. The AIEEE is an admission test for engineering and architecture programmes, and IIT is a group of prestigious engineering colleges.
The CBSE conducts the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance Examination), New Delhi, to shortlist students for admission in undergraduate engineering and architecture programmes offered at centrally funded Indian universities and colleges.
IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) on the other hand, is a group of 16 prestigious engineering colleges spread over the country. Although most of them are autonomous institutes, they are centrally funded and have a uniform entrance exam called IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination).
